72 Tube Stock RVAR upgrade works
With the life extension project completed on the Bakerloo Line’s 72TS Mk.2 fleet, work is now beginning on the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR) programme.
Like the Central Line 92TS, these cars are being fitted with wheelchair bays and LED lighting. Two initial units were selected, with the unit fitted with LED lights already back in passenger service. Another unit continues to remain at Acton Works, being fitted with wheelchair bays to confirm the design and manufacturing process.
This work for RVAR compliance should have already been completed, however permission to extend the date on the 252
Bakerloo Line cars has already been sought by TfL due to both economic impact and feasibility challenges. Permanent exemptions include the need to include ‘next station’ information inside the saloon and the provision of handrails on both sides of the single doorways.
The 72TS is now the oldest fleet to operate in passenger service on London Underground, having entered service in 1974. However, there is little chance of any orders being placed for replacement Bakerloo Line rolling stock until the mid-2020s. An order would almost certainly be tagged onto the existing contract with Siemens Mobility for 94 Piccadilly Line trains.
