METALS RETURN TO SUNDERLAND DOCKS
STEEL traffic held up well during the year despite the financial woes of Liberty, the owner of several railconnected sites including Aldwarke, Stocksbridge and Dalzell. Occasional trains were still using the 11½ miles of freight-only railway from Woodburn Junction to Stockbridge towards the end of the year. A welcome revival was the rail connection to Sunderland Docks. Occasional trains of scrap metal ran from Sunderland to Cardiff from April onwards, while DBC also hauled several trainloads of imported steel coil from Sunderland to Wolverhampton in the summer.
