This is the fifth and final volume in a series that lists new and reopened stations and lines from 1948. The first thing that is apparent on picking up this volume is the sheer number of stations included. Curiously, the total number isn’t stated within the book’s pages, but Rail Express’ dedication to detail has led us to count them page by page and we believe there are a whopping 120 all told. Nine of those are on the revitalised Borders line to Tweedbank, but the others are distributed widely across

the country. Like previous volumes, each station has its own table showing original opening, closure and reopening dates, accompanied modern location shots, though, as one of the authors ruefully observes, adding a degree of individuality is challenging due to standard components, architecture and corporate signage. Stations are listed by route, rather than alphabetically, but even so this (very useful) book is more of a reference work to dip into, rather than an evening’s read.
