RIDING in the cab of No. 345035 on March 7, at speeds of up to 66mph under central London, was a surreally smooth experience, as the tunnel segments flashed by in a hypnotic blur. On the day of our visit, everything, from lighting, through inclined lifts, to the trains themselves, worked perfectly. The cathedral-like stations are a world away from the cramped spaces occupied by the Tube. Although this summer’s opening is limited to Paddington (EL) to Abbey Wood, it is a tantalising vision of the final product. In a word: impressive.
