North British diesel prototype
NEATLY timed for its return of the Modelrail exhibition in Glasgow after an absence of two years, Heljan announced that it was taking on another single locomotive prototype, this time the
NBL diesel prototype No. 10800. It is an early main line prototype ordered by the LMS and bridging Nationalisation which places it outside the locomotive pilot scheme project.
Completed at NBL’s Glasgow works in the early 1950s, and intended for light mixed traffic duties, the locomotive was tested on the Southern, Eastern and London Midland regions. It did not last long, being withdrawn in 1959 and used as a test bed by Brush, before being scrapped in the early 1970s.
Original NBL works drawings and extensive research has been used to build up a picture of this unique Scottish-built locomotive enabling a highly detailed model to be designed. Etched metal fittings on a plastic bodyshell assembly, with what appears to be a separate cab moulding, will make up the superstructure. All-wheel drive, 21-pin DCC socket and a five-pole frame-mounted motor are specified.
Changes made to the locomotive during its short working life are included in the four versions being offered, including original LMS/BR black and silver; weathered BR black with early emblem; BR black and silver and BR green with a late emblem. Each model is priced at £234.95 with an anticipated 2023 delivery.
