AN interesting new initiative by Richard Bowry is the Railway Club Directory, which brings together all current traditional railway societies under one roof. The definition of ‘traditional’ and list of societies is available on the website or via social media. Richard has also produced a paper directory (currently only available to members of listed societies – one of the aims of RCD is to encourage individuals to join up/support the many societies based in the UK).
The National Directory divides societies into broad categories and then lists them alphabetically within each section, providing details such as membership numbers, membership fees and a broad summary of societal aims, often accompanied by full colour reproductions of the front cover of society publications. While most of this information is freely available online, a single reference volume is a useful addition to any enthusiast’s bookshelf.
