NER ES1 BO-BO ELECTRIC
A joint venture between Locomotion Models and Rails of Sheffield has produced ‘OO’ gauge models of a very interesting locomotive type, the NER Bo-Bo Electric Shunting
Type or ES1 which were built for the steeply graded line between Trafalgar Yard and Quayside Yard on the River Tyne.
The line was electrified with conductor rail in the same manner as the North Tyneside suburban network except in yards where overhead wires were used for safety. Consequently, the locomotives were fitted both with shoe beams and a bow pantograph, the latter which was eventually replaced with a cross-arm type. British Railways renumbered them as Nos. 26500-501 and operated them until 1964 when they were replaced with diesel shunting locomotives, but not until they had been repainted in heritage green livery a few years previously.
One locomotive is preserved at Locomotion in Shildon, which is the inspiration for this model, and it makes a lovely addition to the National Collection in Miniature range.
Heljan has produced the model which is due for release by the end of 2022. It has an impressive specification, with a low profile drive allowing a fully detailed and illuminated cab; LED headlamp and allwheel drive. It is detailed with separate fittings for hand rails, shoe beams, hoses and cab controls.
Locomotion Models offers the model in NER green livery whilst Rails of Sheffield sells the British Railways versions, all of which are priced at £220. www.locomotionmodels.com www.railsofsheffield.com
