Talks between RMT and operator continue to resolve ScotRail strikes

-

Talks between the RMT union and ScotRail took place on July 12 in a bid to resolve the ongoing dispute over the extension of Driver Only Operation (Passenger) (DOO(P)).

Strikes took place on July 3 and July 10-11, with further action planned for July 14 and July 16/17 (after this issue of RAIL went to press). Overtime bans were also imposed around (but not during) the strikes.

The RMT described turnout for the first strikes as “rock solid”, but ScotRail said it ran around 70% of its services on strike days. However, bus replacement services ran on some routes, and the Far North and Kyle of Lochalsh lines had only a very limited bus replacement service.

The strikes on July 14 and 16/17 coincided with the Open Golf championship at Troon, and ScotRail introduced “golf-specific” timetables to help passengers get to the competition. The GlasgowAyr route, which serves Troon, is operated by electric trains where drivers already control the doors, and was set to be unaffected by the strikes.

The RMT opposes the introduction of Driver Only Operation and the proposed changes to the role of the guard following the introduction of the new Hitachi Class 385 electric multiple units, which are due to enter service in late 2017.

While these trains can be fitted with door controls for the guard, it is anticipated that drivers will control the doors at their introduction.
