Weekly scrap train runs from port of Sunderland

-

Trains are operating from Port of Sunderland for the first time in 18 years, after DB Cargo began running scrap trains to Cardiff.

DB will run one train per week initially, carrying 1,250 tonnes of scrap from the northeast port to Celsa Steel UK works in south Wales.

The contract is with scrap merchant Ward Bros (Steel) Ltd, and is a deal that is new to rail.

DB said it won the award because of the provision of specialist wagons. Because the scrap is not compacted, the length and size of DB’s MBA wagons means heavy weight material can be carried despite its size.

The metal is processed at the Steel Works to make finished products including rebars used in the construction industry.
