Rail freight’s single largest customer in the UK is Network Rail, and for that reason GBRf is interested in NR’s plans for renewals and upgrades.

“We would look to be involved in Control Period 6 [April 1 2019-March 31 2024],” said Smith.

“Sir Peter Hendy [NR chairman] gets that. He gets the need for plans and spending. Overall, Network Rail is hugely significant for rail freight. If rail freight is worth £850 million after coal, then Network Rail’s value to the sector is £150m. It will affect competition on rail.”
