Rail (UK) - - News -

South Western Railway Class 701 electric multiple units will carry up to 1,219 passengers, according to the franchise specification released by Government on January 25.

The details of the agreement show that a ten-car set will have 546 seats and space for 673 standing passengers. SWR has 60 of these sets on order. A five-car ‘701’ will have 269 seats and 330 standing spaces. Thirty are on order.

Bombardier is building the Aventras at Derby Litchurch Lane, with the first due to be released next year.

The document also shows that the five-car sets were to be classified as Class 705s, while the ten-car trains were to be ‘711s’. Instead, these will be ‘701s’, and the ten Aventras ordered for c2c will be Class 711s.

Rock Rail is financing the SWR fleet.
