Bank Hall closed in next phase of Merseyrail upgrade

-

The next phase of infrastructure work required to introduce new trains to the Merseyrail network is under way.

Network Rail has started Phase 2 of its platform upgrades, before Stadler Class 777s enter traffic in 2020.

The first phase on the Ormskirk line has been completed, entailing platform upgrades and track remodelling at eight stations.

The next phase involves closing Bank Hall station from November 12 until December 16, while it is upgraded. Trains will continue to run through the station.

The third phase runs from December 27 until January 2.

The Wirral Loop Line and river crossing will be closed, with trains for New Brighton and West Kirby starting and terminating at Birkenhead North, while trains from Ellesmere Port and Chester will start and terminate at Birkenhead Central (the latter will be until January 1).

In total, some 11 phases are planned between October this year and June 2019.

“Adjusting the height, width and layout of the platforms is more complex than it may sound,” said Network Rail Senior Sponsor Marcus Barnes.

“We’ll need to close sections of the line to complete these vital works safely.”
