Tunnel project nears completion

Rail (UK) - - News -

Network Rail says it is nearing completion of a two-year project to overhaul the two-mile Sevenoaks Tunnel.

The project has involved laying new track and a new drainage system. It has cost £21 million, and has improved journey times by 20% for passengers because 50mph speed restrictions are no longer in place.

NR said the work will improve reliability for Southeastern services, as well as Thameslink services that have suffered knock-on delays through diversion of SE services.

“We’re pleased to have delivered this project to upgrade one of the country’s oldest and longest rail tunnels, using the investment provided by Government through the Thameslink Resilience Programme,” said NR South East Route Managing Director John Halsall.

“Delays due to flooding had become a regular occurrence through Sevenoaks Tunnel, but we’ve been able to reduce delays by a fifth - giving passengers well-earned relief to their journeys.”
