Safety award for Metrolink stations

-

Ten of Manchester Metrolink’s stations have received praise for their high levels of safety, after inspection by a specialist team.

The stops - Exchange Quay, Salford Quays, Anchorage, Harbour City, MediaCityUK, Old Trafford, Deansgate-Castlefield, Etihad Campus, Baguley and Manchester Airport - have received the Safer Tram Stop Award following assessment.

The aim of the awards, which are given by national policing project Secured by Design, is to prevent crime and the fear of crime, and to provide guidance to operators on how to create and maintain safe environments. The stops are subject to assessment by Crime Prevention Officers from Greater Manchester Police, and the accreditation is initially awarded for one year before reassessment is required.

Transport for Greater Manchester said it has now identified a further 12 stops to be nominated for inspection.

“It is important that every member of our community feels safe to travel on public transport without feeling intimidated or unduly concerned by the behaviour of others,” said TfGM Head of Metrolink Danny Vaughan.
