Axe beckons for East Yorkshire’s semaphore signals

- ROB FRANCE.

DRS 20302 leads a railhead treatment train past Welton gate box (built 1904) on the Hull-Selby line with 20303 on the rear. Network Rail planned to axe the semaphore signals on this route over the weekend of December 1-2 (after this issue of RAIL went to press) in favour of electronic control from York. The changes will close seven signal boxes as well as Welton, Cave, Oxmardyke and Barlby gate boxes, Hessle Road (built 1962), Melton Lane (1921), Brough East (1904), Crabley Creek (1891), Broomfleet (1904), Gilberdyke Junction (1903) and Selby (1870s).
