Soon after the privatisat­ion process ended in 1997, a series of major accidents prompted questions about the way it had damaged the industry’s accident defences.

Of these, it would be the collision at Ladbroke Grove on October 5 1999 that eventually led (inter alia) to more robust rolling stock designs, and sped further the adoption not of Automatic Train Protection, but the Train Protection and Warning System.
