Caledonian Sleeper

-

I agree with David Pearson ( Open

Access, RAIL 871) and Barry Doe ( The Fare Dealer, RAIL 872) that the Caledonian Sleeper is exceptionally poor. It is hard to find information, and is very reluctant to accept bookings.

But I feel that David falls into the trap of not comparing like with like. The single fare is usually between £100 and £120 with a Senior Railcard for a fully flexible and cancellable ticket. I am never sure if this is First Class or Standard Class single occupancy. The only difference seems to be lack of breakfast and miscellaneous toilet sundries.

I have used easyJet in the past at a fare of around £45, but began to use the Sleeper regularly (Inverness-London return) when I discovered that the air fares were very time- and date-dependent, and can be much higher - especially at convenient times of travel. When the £25 single taxi fare or airport parking is taken into account, plus travel into London from the airport, the Sleeper offer becomes much more attractive. Additionally, the airport wait and general hassle are big disadvantages - especially at Gatwick.

I agree that the Sleeper is not cheap, but I do not think that the price differential is as great as portrayed. It is also comfortable, convenient and easy to use.

And do not forget the existence of the ‘day coach’, which offers a single and passably comfortable journey for under £40. I have used this facility successfully, but naturally prefer the comfort of a berth where possible.

Finally, do not forget that Caledonian Sleeper is assiduous about meeting Delay/Repay claims, which can be a welcome bonus. John Y Murray, Inverness
