Safety body proves its worth
The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) has added value to the light rail and tramway sector and supported continued improvement since its creation in 2019.
That’s the verdict of the Office of Rail and Road, in its assessment on whether LRSSB is delivering on the recommendations set out by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch following the Sandilands derailment in November 2016.
Having concluded that the LRSSB is providing guidance and tools to improve the sector’s understanding of risk, the ORR has made six further recommendations.
They include the need for a long-term strategy and plan for LRSSB’s work, which should - in consultation with the ORR and the Department for Transport
- set out clear guidance and funding arrangements.
HM Chief Inspector of Railways Ian Prosser CBE said: “We can see there is real value in continuing to have a safety and standards body that meets the specific needs of the light rail and tramway sector.
“These recommendations will also help ensure the sector continues to have a structured approach to the continuous improvement in safety standards.”
