Services cancelled after ScotRail train derails

-

An emergency timetable was in force on ScotRail’s North Clyde routes from May 7-10, after a six-car train derailed at Coatbridge Sunnyside Junction in Lanarkshire.

The operator described the incident as a “low-speed derailment of an empty train” that occurred at approximately 2130 on May 6. No one was injured.

Rail replacement bus services were provided between Bathgate and Shettleston, while services between Helensburgh and Edinburgh Waverley, and Balloch and Airdrie, were subject to cancellations and alternations until Network Rail could re-rail the train (formed of 320309 and 318265) and repair damaged track and signalling.

ScotRail has launched its own investigation into the cause of the incident, while investigators from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have also been notified.

A RAIB spokesman told RAIL: “RAIB has requested the railway to secure evidence related to the derailment. This will be reviewed by the Branch and the appropriate course of action decided in the coming days.”
