Elephant & Castle improvements

-

Contractors to complete the next phase of passenger capacity improvements at Elephant & Castle Tube station are being sought by Transport for London.

The work forms part of a wider £4 billion redevelopment of the area, including 5,000 new homes and a shopping area. A new ‘station box’ - a concrete-lined box that will eventually contain the station on the Bakerloo Line is also under construction.

Work on Stage 1 started earlier this year and is fully paid for by third parties - Greater London Authority, London Borough of Southwark, and developer contributions.

TfL has now published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) seeking suppliers to deliver the next stage of the capacity upgrade project, with a deadline of May 20 for expressions of interest.

It will involve the design and construction of passenger tunnels connecting the new station box to the existing Northern Line platforms, and associated civil works associated with the completion of the new station box.

The project will deliver capacity to meet a predicted 30% increase in use by 2031 and provide step-free access to the Northern line platforms for the first time.

The current phase (Stage 1) involves tunnelling which, subject to funding of a future fit-out of the station box (Stage 2), will enable a new entrance and ticket hall. This will be integrated with the Elephant & Castle shopping centre redevelopment under construction and eventually replace the current Northern Line entrance and ticket hall.

Stage 2 works, including the station fit-out needed to bring the new station into operation, are not yet funded. TfL said it “continues to work to secure additional external funding for Stage 2 works”.
