Autumn closures to enable swing bridge upgrades
Network Rail is reminding users of the Wherry and East Suffolk lines that services will be suspended between Reedham-Lowestoft and Lowestoft-Beccles on various dates in the autumn, to enable the upgrade of electrical and mechanical equipment on the swing bridges at Reedham, Somerleyton and Oulton.
Thought to date back to around 1905, the internal components of the three bridges have not been replaced in more than 100 years and subsequently need frequent and costly maintenance.
To make the bridges less prone to faults, reduce the need for maintenance, and improve reliability to rail and river traffic, Network Rail will replace the winch systems, hydraulic jacks and pipework, lighting and power systems. This will require the bridges to be closed on September 24-25, October 8-9, October 22-November 6, and November 20.
“These bridges are an important part of our railway heritage and also an important part of keeping both rail and boat traffic moving,” said Network Rail‘s Route Director for Anglia Ellie Burrows.
“Renewing the components will reduce the risk of mechanical problems and help keep services running safely, smoothly and reliably for our passengers, as well as maintaining access to the ports and marinas.”
