Crossrail timetable
1989: Central London Rail Study proposes three new links - east to west (now Crossrail), Wimbledon-Hackney, and an extension to the Jubilee Line.
1991: Crossrail Bill presented to Parliament.
1994: Parliament rejects Bill.
2000: Government asks Strategic Rail Authority to examine east-west route.
2001: Cross London Rail Links formed to take the project forward.
2003: Preferred route published.
2004: Transport Secretary Alistair Darling gives project go-ahead following review by Network Rail Deputy Chairman Adrian Montague.
2005: Hybrid Crossrail Bill presented to Parliament.
2008: Royal Assent received.
2010: Station work starts.
2012: First tunnel boring machine launches.
2014: Tunnelling complete.
2016: Class 345 trains unveiled.
2016: Crossrail officially renamed the Elizabeth Line.
2018: First trains enter the central tunnels for testing.
2021: Trial operations start.
2022: Central section is due to open.
