Deadlines for Bradshaw
Like Stephen Roberts (RAIL 955), our family also has a copy of the 1863 Bradshaw Guide, admittedly a facsimile, so I was interested when he noted the omission of Millbrook station (opened in 1861).
Back in 2012, I wrote an article for PIERS, the journal of the National Piers Society, to see how many of the 18 seaside piers around in 1863 were included. I didn’t expect all to be covered, as some were then mere landing stages.
Given the fact that piers at Southport (opened 1860), Bournemouth (1861), Southsea Clarence (1862), Worthing (1862) and Blackpool North (1863) are not referenced, it is clear to me that research for the handbook ended a good few years before its ultimate publication.
