Rail freight: changing patterns

- Source: Future of Freight: a long-term plan.

Container traffic is now the dominant type of UK rail freight, accounting for 41% of the total business. Construction (always a big player) is now 28%, while metals traffic (steel and scrap) has fallen to just 8%. Coal, which as recently as 2013 had a third of all business, now barely gets a mention at less than 2% of the national freight tonnage.
