Support staff jobs

While agreeing with many of Nigel Harris’s well-reasoned arguments (Comment, RAIL 957), another aspect of a rail strike is the 2,500 redundancies proposed by the Government.

These redundancies are supposed to come from the technical support staff responsible for maintaining and repairing the rail system.

After discussing the vote and its implications with several rail workers, while travelling here in the North West, they are of course seeking their first pay rise in three years.But they are also concerned over safety issues, if and when these technical staff are released.
