GWR smartcard for Bristol area
Great Western Railway passengers can register for a pay-as-you-go smartcard to use around Bristol from around the “beginning of September”, says GWR.
The cards work by tapping in and tapping out at origin and destination stations, with passengers charged the best available walk-up fare for their journey (peak or off-peak, depending on when they travel).
GWR says season tickets and other tickets can be stored on the cards, but that users of flexi-season tickets should store them on a separate smartcard.
The area the cards cover is bounded by Ashchurch for Tewkesbury, Chippenham, Freshford, Weston-super-Mare, Severn Beach and Patchway.
