London receives too much

“Crossrail is an example of what our railways should be,” says Christian Wolmar (RAIL 958).

He’s quite right - but just not always in London.

Somehow, they found around £4 billion down the back of the sofa to complete Crossrail. Yet for want of less than 1% of that, an important rail link cannot be completed in Bristol. And the desperatel­y needed rebuild of the Ely complex is likely to be cancelled.

Is it any wonder people outside the M25 have nothing good to say about London, or the attitude of the government to the rest of the country?
