Hitachi Class 810 driving vehicle completed

- JAMES GARTHWAITE.

One of the first completed East Midlands Railway Class 810 driving vehicles stands outside Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe factory on September 7. Destined to form part of 810001, the bi-mode unit differs from other examples within Hitachi’s Intercity Express Train fleets by having a more angled front and measuring 24 metres in length instead of the standard 25m-26m. Type testing will take place at Network Rail’s Melton Rail Innovation and Development Centre, before service introduction takes place next year. EMR has ordered 33 of the five-car trains, which will be known as Aurora units and based at Derby Etches Park.
