London to Edinburgh halfway sign restored

- NETWORK RAIL.

Teams from Network Rail have restored an iconic railway sign located just north of York station, following a request from the daughter of the man who made it almost 90 years ago. Pauline Kerr contacted NR earlier this year to ask that the sign, which marks the halfway point between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line, be cleaned and restored. The sign was made and installed in 1938 by Pauline’s father Ken Bainbridge, when he worked as an apprentice, aged just 17. NR has now carried out a full repaint and says a new maintenance regime has been put in place to ensure the sign remains in good condition.
