Switch to rail cuts manufacturer’s emissions
XPO Logistics has turned to rail freight to reduce emissions for plastic pipe manufacturer Wavin. Having managed the transport of Wavin products from plants in Wiltshire and South Yorkshire since 2018, XPO Logistics trialled the use of rail in June and then fully implemented it in September, through a rail service agreement with Malcom Logistics. The Wavin products are moved by road from Chippenham (Wiltshire) to Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Northants). They are then moved by rail to Grangemouth (Scotland), using up to six multi-modal containers. If the service is used five days a week, it is expected to reduce Wavin’s annual C02 emissions by 58% and NOx emissions by some 18.8 tonnes.
