Northern Lines – Leeds to Selby and Goole

-

THE LATEST in Middleton’s Northern Lines series features the busy route from Leeds to Goole via Selby, one that crosses the East Coast Main Line and has a history of both freight and passenger traffic. The route could be considered as Yorkshire’s first main line and it helped to connect Leeds to Goole and the Humber in the mid 1800s and quickly tied in to the ECML at Selby.

The book begins the journey at Leeds and then heads east to Neville Hill and its famous depot before continuing into the Yorkshire countryside. As is to be expected from these excellent books, the selection of images is superb, ranging from some very old ones right up to the present day, even including LNER HSTs stored at Gascoigne Wood in March 2020.

Arguably the most unusual is a shot of Class 52 D1023 Western Fusilier passing Peckfield Colliery in February 1977 on a charter, not exactly regular fare in the area.

Overall, this is another brilliant book in the series and, as expected, also includes the standard track plans, maps and diagrams, and ticket reproductions alongside the superb images. Definitely one to add to your book collection. (MN)
