LNER stands down Intercity 225 sets

-

AS EXPECTED, LNER removed its fleet of Class 91s and Mk 4 stock from traffic on January 15 in a temporary move expected to last until June. The reduced service on East Coast Main Line routes due to the latest lockdown has reduced requirements and as LNER still has to pay for its Hitachi Azumas whether or not they are running, it was the best way to reduce costs.

It will also allow the Class 91s to undergo G-exams. The January 15 day was chosen as it was the start date for the partial route closure at Werrington while the new dive under is installed, with fewer trains running.

The remaining InterCity 225 fleet has been stored at Neville Hill and Doncaster Belmont, with several units moved via Newcastle to turn them. Neville Hill will now be responsible for their maintenance and their new home until the additional new trains LNER is seeking are delivered.

On January 14, 91107 powered the 5Z09 from King’s Cross to Neville Hill via Newcastle. The next day saw the final Class 91 diagrams for now, with 91105 and 91130 working the final two and 91124 also used between

York, London and Leeds. Another set went to Neville Hill via Newcastle and was powered by 91127.

Active LNER Class 91 disposition as of January 15 was:

Bounds Green: 91101/106/109/ 114/119.

Neville Hill: 91107

Wabtec Doncaster: 91110/1111 Doncaster Belmont: 91127 In service: 91105/124/130

?? ?? On its final day in service before temporary storage, 91127 leads the 1N81 0906 King’s Cross to Newcastle on January 14 through a very wintry Tuxford. (Nick Green)
