Simon Bendall examines the latest offering from Heljan.

The last couple of years have seen Heljan rapidly expand its range of ready-to-run O gauge diesel locomotives with several different classes released and yet more under development. One of the more unlikely, but nonetheless welcome, additions is the Class 17, but the manufacturer is already quite familiar with the Claytons thanks to the 4mm scale model released a good few years ago.

Four different versions have been produced, each having a recommended price of £549, and supplies are already limited amongst retailers. In addition to the BR blue variant illustrated here there are three green versions featuring yellow panels, full yellow ends and yellow panels with factory weathering applied. The specification for the models is entirely consistent with Heljan’s 7mm philosophy, having two motors, one per bogie, driving all four axles. Directional LED lighting is also fitted, consisting of illuminated headcode panels and tail lights.
