THIS IS an impressive 96page A4 pictorial book. All the images are in black and white and show a mix of traction in the attractive Peak District area from the lens of the late Peter Gater. Routes such as the Hope Valley, Wirksworth branch, Matlock branch and around Buxton are included. Traction covered includes Classes 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, 44,
45, 47, 50, 56, 55, 58, 60 and first and second generation DMUs. There are also a few steam images from special trains in the 1970s and 1980s.
Each image has a very brief caption detailing the traction, train and location. Perhaps some of these captions could have been a bit longer and a bit more informative?
The selection of locos and locations is very varied in a scenic part of the network, which makes it an interesting book to flick through. Overall, it fulfils its brief very well, is very reasonably priced, and a worthy acquisition for any modern traction enthusiast. (PD)
