Chronology
1846 – Opening of Carnforth station, which was designed by William Tite.
1895 – Installation of the famous station clock built by Joyce of Whitchurch.
1945 – Brief Encounter is filmed at Carnforth station (Lancashire) towards the end of WW2.
1968 – Rationalisation of Carnforth, which loses its main line services. MPD is also closed.
1969 – Closure of sidings and refreshment room as the Carnforth rundown continues.
1970 – Removal of former main line platforms as the WCML prepares for electrification.
1974 – A remake of Brief Encounter is filmed at Brockenhurst and Shawford in Hampshire.
1987 – Carnforth is now an unmanned station and Railtrack proposes demolishing its buildings.
2003 – Heritage Centre and Refreshment Room open at Carnforth station.
2011 – Proposals to reinstate Carnforth’s main line platforms turned down by Network Rail.
