Union of South Africa: Stories from the Support Crew
GRESLEY A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa has become a legend in its own lifetime. It was recently retired from the main line and is currently at the East Lancashire Railway, still providing passengers with the chance to ride behind it. In this book the famous loco’s support crew share their memories and anecdotes of working to keep it running over the years for the enjoyment of thousands of railway enthusiasts. This account includes its original return to the main line during the 1960s, its overhaul and subsequent exploits across the UK network.
It was purchased from British Railways in 1966 and, as with all steam locos, required some extensive attention to get it back in steam. The often amusing stories are supplemented by more serious ones and all provide a superb insight into what it takes to keep this magnificent loco on the rails. The book is superbly illustrated, with many previously unpublished images, and makes for a wonderful tribute to a real thoroughbred; well worth adding to the bookshelf.
