THE NORTH Yorkshire Moors Railway has completed its £4m carriage shed, one of the six key projects included in its £10m Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey (YMJ) Appeal.
The five-track shed houses 40 carriages, for the first time enabling servicing and cleaning of the railway's rolling stock to be completed undercover.
The new facility at Pickering forms part of a larger scheme to transform the railway and secure its future as part of the YMJ Appeal, which is funded by grants from the EU, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Department of Environment Farming and Rural Affairs, Local Enterprise Partnership and donations from the charity’s supporters.
Other YMJ projects include converting four carriages to provide ‘fussfree’ easy access, with seating for wheelchair users and accessible toilets on every train.
In February 2022, YMJ funding will enable the renewal and reconstruction of Bridges 24 and 25 at Goathland Station, both of which are considered to be in need of replacement.
