The Class 37 remains my all-round favourite locomotive design and it was also the locomotive I learned first as a driver, back in 1992, when I was based in Swindon. My favourite memories from the 1980s are of Class 37s clagging and thrashing Mk2 stock trains around Scotland, but also on local trains around Bristol as well as the Marches line. So when 37s returned to Anglia and Cumbria in 2015, I couldn’t quite believe it!

37403 Isle of Mull made me feel like a teenager again when it provided the thrash and clag I remembered from 30 years ago. It’s good to know there are still times when something can make you feel young again.
