AMBERLEY PUBLISHING has curved out something of a niche for publishing photographic railway books focussing on a particular geographical area.
John Law is a well-known photographer who has an enviable collection of images. For this book, using the railways in and around London gives him plenty of scope to show the reader a huge variety of locations and the changing nature of our railway over the past 50 years. The book is broken down into sections covering various areas of the network around the capital. In addition to the main railway network,
London Underground and Docklands Light Railway is also depicted.
Most of the pages feature two photographs with detailed captions provided.
The reproduction quality of the images is very good and the vast majority are printed in colour, with monochrome images restricted to historical content. Arguably the poorest reproduction of the photos in the book is that of the Class 73 featured on the cover, which is a little dark.
Priced at £15.99, this is an excellent record showing the reader how much the railways around London have changed in our recent history.
