PLATFORM 5 has long been recognised for its wide range of pocket books covering all aspects of railway rolling stock, from locomotives to wagons and coaches, picking up where Ian Allan’s ABC’S books once dominated the market.

The latest edition of the Platform 5 Diesel & Electric Loco Register has been compiled by Andy Chard, listing all diesel and electric locomotives built for the UK railway network. It is split into class order, providing details of all identities carried by each locomotive, when they entered service and were withdrawn, and what happened to them, unless they are still active.

One interesting development from previous editions of the book is that all of the entries for locomotives which have been disposed of now include details of when and where they were scrapped. Compiling this additional information alone must have taken a huge amount of time to collate and is an improvement on previous versions. Additionally, the 256-page softback A5 format also includes a comprehensive listing of locomotive names and a host of other useful information. The book is illustrated with a number of excellent quality colour and monochrome images, which help break up the columns of information.

Platform 5 excels in producing these types of books and as a reference tool, this book is an invaluable addition to the bookshelf.
