Sorry saga surrounding 45015 nears a conclusion

-

THE SITUATION surrounding the derelict remains of Class 45/0 ‘Peak’ locomotive 45015 appeared to be close to a resolution in early October, with it looking increasingly likely that it will be broken up for scrap after any reusable spares have been recovered. Simon Powell, a director of the Shackerstone Railway Society, stated in early October that the locomotive had been seized by the railway from its former owner.

Following an asbestos survey, a small amount of asbestos would be removed from the locomotive as soon as possible.

Mr Powell also stated there had been conversations with other locomotive owners regarding parts from 45015 that may be useful.

He has invited other owners to get in touch about any possible spares that could be salvaged from the derelict hulk – a subject of controversy among enthusiasts due to its poor condition. 45015 arrived at Shackerstone in 2002, being the last Class 45 to remain at Toton Depot following withdrawal, having passed into the ownership of English Welsh & Scottish Railways. However, following delivery to the Battlefield Line, very little restoration work was carried out on the locomotive.

It has remained in limbo for several years since.
