The Arch Company Award for Urban Heritage

-

This award goes to the operator of a significant urban station where upkeep and enhancement perpetuate its historic ambience commensurate with modern passenger requirements.

The work at Knaresborough fitted the bill very nicely. The long range of rooms and offices here, fronted by a strong canopy over the eastbound platform and dating from the 1860s, form an attractive unit, but that had long been largely superfluous to modern operational requirements and left to decay. Finally Northern, the operator, has been able to give it a good makeover as part of its drive to make this station, so well sited in the centre of this historic town, attractive to commercial tenants.

Gorilla Brothers Ltd took over some of the rooms at the station for its Track & Sleeper Real Ale and Gin Bar; they jointly shared the award with Northern.
