Other winners
In the face of so many strong entries, we increased the number of awards this year. Here is a round-up...
The Southeastern Commercial Restoration Award went to Network Rail for its fine work in restoring Appledore station, in Kent, to make it fit for commercial tenancies. Community groups were much at the fore, with award-winning work at Kilmarnock station, who claimed the BAM Nuttall Partnership Award. Stow, on the reopened Borders Railway, and Saltash (entered by the town council), together shared the Network Rail Community Award.
Work at all three of these important station buildings is designed to make them suitable for community use. Smaller projects also scored well, including the restored Victorian gentlemen’s toilets in the 1894 extension to Newcastle Central station by LNER, which scooped the Railway Heritage Trust Conservation Award. The restored clock tower at Bognor Regis station and the restored Spooner family graves in Beddgelert churchyard (he played an important role in the later 19th century development of the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways and other local lines) were both shortlisted. The winner of the Minor Schemes Award was the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership for its bold restoration of the last surviving former Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway concrete running-in board on the national network at West Runton, near Sheringham.
