55022 Royal Scots Grey crosses Nan Uamh Viaduct on May 2, 2015.
When a friend told me that preserved Deltic 55022 Royal Scots Grey had worked the Royal Scotsman in the Highlands I could barely believe it. The question was, would she do the Western run at the weekend? A favourite locomotive, on my favourite line, with arguably the smartest train in Britain.
So, I was thrilled to find that RSG was indeed to work the train, and it was time for another overnighter in the Highlands. And this was the photo I wanted.
The stunning view from the crag looking over Nan Uamh Viaduct as 55022 (cunningly disguised as longscrapped 55003 Meld) hauls 1H86, the Spean Bridge to Mallaig Royal Scotsman.
It was a fantastic moment, and a lucky one, too. The fine length of cloud that dominates the skyline took the sun away within seconds of taking the shot.
