50049 Defiance rounds the horseshoe on March 6, 2005.

After spending many days chasing the Class

50s down south, I wasn’t missing out on the opportunity of photographing them in the Highlands.

It was a weekend when the weather gods threw everything at us. We had hail, torrential showers, bright sunshine, and even a rainbow. It really was nail-biting stuff as the tour crept around the horseshoe between Bridge of Orchy and Tyndrum. I felt sure that the sun would be lost to cloud, so I was unbelievably thankful that the light remained with me as 50049 Defiance clattered towards me, working 1Z24 Fort William to Dalmuir on March 6, 2005, with the Pathfinders ‘Monarch of the Glen’ charter.

I didn’t know whether to be more relieved or more thrilled, before taking the long hike back to the car.
