CFPS 40088 cab joins the Cab Yard collection

-

THE CLASS 40 Preservation Society has sold its trailer-mounted cab from 40088 to Richard Benyon to join his Cab Yard collection, with the cab due to move to the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway over the coming weeks.

The CFPS restored the cab several years ago and mounted it onto a road trailer and attached a sales unit to it, so it could be moved around the country to heritage railways and open day events, as well as providing a covered sales stand for the society.

However, since before the pandemic, the trailer and cab have been stored at Baron Street Locomotive Works on the East Lancashire Railway. The combination of a reduced number of events for the cab to attend and the cost of maintaining the cab and sales unit, as well as the requirements to carry out maintenance and annual MOTS on the road trailer, have seen the CFPS decide to sell the cab to Mr Benyon.

The proposal was put to CFPS members at their recent annual general meeting in April, who voted in favour of the sale. The agreement between Mr Benyon and the CFPS means that the society will have first option on buying the cab back, should Mr Benyon decide to ever dispose of it from his collection.

It is expected that the cab and trailer will move to Llanelli over the next few weeks. It requires some maintenance and repairs but is in generally good condition, and Mr Benyon expressed his gratitude to the CFPS and their members for filling an important gap in his collection.

The CFPS AGM also saw Clive Elverstone elected to the position of CFPS chairman, replacing John Stephens, who stepped down earlier in the year for health reasons. Mr Elverstone had previously been acting chairman following Mr Stephens’ resignation.
