THIS RECENT
release from the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society focuses on the various designs of first-generation diesel multiple units, which weren’t overly welcomed by many enthusiasts when first introduced into service, but went on to become an important part of our railway history. The humble DMU transformed the fortunes of many railway lines, where they offered a much more economical train service compared to the steam locomotive-hauled services many of them replaced.
Compiled by Robert Dalton, DMUS In Colour takes us from those early prototypes through to designs that went on to be produced in large numbers, such as the Class 101s, 108s and 117s – many of which went on to enjoy a second life in preservation after they retired from service on the national rail network.
Each chapter begins with an explanatory text section, followed by numerous highquality photographs showing the DMUS at various points throughout their careers, with detailed and well-researched captions. Many DMUS which received unique or special liveries are also included.
The hardback book contains 168 pages and is printed on good quality, white gloss paper. Reproduction of the images is generally excellent, and the amount of information contained in the various chapters and also in the captions is sufficiently detailed for those readers who may not be familiar with the various designs.
One problem sometimes associated with books that rely on historical colour photographs is that often the quality of the image isn’t as good as it should be, but they are included because of their historical value rather than quality. That problem is not present in this book; all of the photographs have reproduced very well, and have clearly been very carefully selected.
DMUS In Colour is a truly excellent publication that should be added to your bookshelves if you have any interest in the humble DMU, as it has been so well put together and deserves to become a sell-out. For £27.50, it represents very good value for money. Copies can be bought directly from the RCTS website. Highly recommended.
