LRSSB looks to standardise training and development on UK tramways
approach to the management of training and development on the UK tramways is to be transformed in a ne w scheme being led by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB).
The LRSSB is leading a project to create a centralised learning platform by developing an online resource that can be used by the various tram networks to plan and maintain their own training programmes. The system will allow operators to monitor employee competencies, keep track of required certifications, and help identify the most appropriate training courses in an effort to deliver consistency across the light rail sector and create a high standard for light rail training.
To help manage the project, which has the backing of the Office of Rail and Road, the LRSSB has expanded its team to include Edinburgh Trams training manager Marlene Pearson, who developed a similar smaller-scale system at Edinburgh Trams. She will now work with the LRSSB on a larger scheme suitable for use by the entire light rail sector, on part-time secondment to the organisation.
She said: “I am excited to be part of this initiative and fully appreciate how this can support the sector as we continue to advance and explore the use of technology within light rail. I believe that, with the help of the sector, the LRSSB is perfectly placed to achieve this.”
Carl Williams, LRSSB’S chief executive, said: “By listening to colleagues and key stakeholders, we’ve identified a clear need for a comprehensive Learning Management System that embraces the current and future needs of UK tramways. “Marlene’s skills, knowledge and experience are already proving invaluable as we work towards the delivery of what promises to be an essential tool for standardising competences across key roles within light rail, identifying any skills gaps, and providing another major boost for sector safety.”
