Spot-On Model Identification

-

Maker's Name and Trade Mark are clearly marked on base of the model (‘SPOT-ON’ and ‘Models by Tri-ang’). Some New Zealand produced versions have nothing at all on the base.

Model Name is shown on the base (except some New Zealand versions) while the Model Number is usually shown on box but not always on the model.

Baseplates can be any of a variety of colours: black, silver, grey - even green has been observed on the base of a maroon version of No. 155 Taxi!

Scale of models is 1/42 (with very few exceptions) and is usually (but not always) shown on the base.

Wheel hubs on cars are usually turned aluminium with a raised ‘hub cap.’ Truck models usually have diecast and more accurate representations of real hubs. Tyres are mostly black rubber (occasionally plastic) on all the vehicle models. Rear twin wheels have special ‘double tyres.’ Number plates are represented on most Spot-On models with the exception of those having plastic chassis (such as 266 Bull Nose

Morris and 279 MG Midget). A large range of registration numbers were available to factory production staff and were applied randomly to most models. Different number plates are therefore to be expected on different examples of the same model and do not have any effect on the price.

Windscreens and windows are included in all vehicle models.

Other features include seats and steering wheel on most models, suspension on most cars, driver, other figures and lorry loads with some. Very few ‘decals’ or ‘frills’ is the norm.

Colours were applied to cars in a random fashion and have no real bearing on their market price.

Colour Collector Cards were included with all models supplied in allcard boxes until 1963.

Prices shown in the ‘Market Price Range’ column are for mint models in pristine boxes. These models are rare, hence their high market prices. The condition of models generally encountered tends towards the average and consequently command lower prices.
