TR6 V 99

Real Classic - - Letters -

I enjoyed last year’s article and letters on the Norton 650SS. I also never had a problem with my 1962 Dommi 99 in the head gasket area. Four years of ownership with the 99 in solo and sidecar use proved it to be reliable and a pleasant motorcycle. It took us to the Dragon and Elephant rallies with a Steib sidecar attached. In solo form it carried me to the IoM TT.

Subsequently I owned a similar age Triumph 650 TR6; not a huge difference in performance. The TR6 was a few pounds lighter and the saddle was an inch or so lower. I found the Triumph a more comfortable ride, sitting ‘in it’ rather than ‘on it’ as on the 99.

Fascinating comparison, thanks David. Let’s explore that can of worms, shall we? Has anyone else owned comparable Norton / Triumph twins and, if so, which did you prefer? Photos and opinions welcome! Rowena
